The new Mazda3 has just been launched in South Africa, but I’m not here to tell you about that. I am here to make a case for the outgoing 3 hatchback because it’s worth considering and you could probably buy one right now (July 2019) at a discounted rate.
Here are five reasons to consider buying the outgoing Mazda3
It stands out from the crowd
In a country whose roads are filled with market favourites such as the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla hatch (previously Auris), the Mazda3 is a refreshing departure from the norm.
Its design follows the company’s KODO design language with lines that look as though it was carved with a Samurai sword. Sharp, sophisticated and pleasing on the eye. Yes, the new Mazda3 is all these things too, but the lines aren’t as sharp before.
Great standard spec
Despite now being the older car, this generation of the Mazda3 comes with a raft of standard features including power windows, air-conditioning, radio/CD/AUX-in/USB/Bluetooth handsfree connectivity, six airbags, ABS with EBD and EBA, keyless start and more.
The model that we had on test also came fitted with a 7-inch display MZD connect system, a reverse camera, dual zone climate control, parking sensors and the rear, and blind spot monitoring to name but a few. What more could you possibly want?
It’s great to drive
This was the first 3 to feature Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technology. This system provides integrated control of the engine, transmission, chassis and body. Our particular test car was very comfortable to drive with its 2.0-litre engine with 121kW and 210Nm of torque, and six-speed automatic transmission.
It can feel sluggish at some points due to its naturally aspirated plumbing (and relatively low torque output) which could be bother some of you, but I felt it to be perfectly fine for my commute and the odd trip to the local shop and back. PS The manual gearbox is a peach!
You can get a new car at a “second-hand price”
Now that the new Mazda3 has been launched, dealers across the country will be looking to move their old stock as quickly as possible in order to make space for the new model. As a result, many will most likely start offering great deals on this model. Bargain hunt!
Holds its value
I know I just said that you can pick up one at a reasonably good price, and you can. It is also good to note that Mazda’s tend to hold their value pretty well, so selling on this Mazda3 in the future will mean that you can ask for a decent price from the next owner.
So, yeah - the new Mazda3 may have landed, but there’s a lot to be said about buying the outgoing model too. It deserves a fair shot for your buying consideration.
