Of course there is stiff competition from the likes of the brand new Renault Captur (88kW Dynamic R239 900.00), Nissan’s updated Juke (1.2T Acenta+ R277 900.00) or Kia’s quirky Soul (2.0 Street R284 995.00) all of which are definitely worth a look-in. But if you’re really looking to stand out from the crowd then C4 Cactus will be a sure-fire hit.

If you can look past the slightly underpowered engine, and any negative connotations associated with French products, the new Clio is brimming with French flair, good dynamics and a healthy wallop of standard tech, more so than the new Polo, and in that regard it surely does deserve your money.

While most other small cars, including those made by VW, fade into obscurity the Up! is actually something you want to drive and you’ll be happy to be seen in. It embraces what VW used to be about, by being cheap, fun to drive and not costing a fortune. The VW Up! really is a people’s car for the 21st century.

With the new Kia Soul you get a very unique package which is sure to get you noticed, combined with practical 4-door motoring for the family. While some of the competition might have the better perceived interior quality and desirability, the Soul wins on practicality and standard spec.

The Volvo V40 T5, whilst managing to pack as much power as a hot-hatch, isn’t one. It’s a confident, (mostly) comfortable, wonderfully styled long distance cruiser in the Gran Turismo mould, with a superb and well kitted interior. And, it has the ability that when it’s needed, it delivers an abundance of power and torque to dispatch any situation.

At R299 900 it does offer a lot of vehicle for your money, a decent standard specification and the feeling of solidity with regards to interior build quality. In a highly competitive industry like the taxi industry longevity is a key buying decision and in that regard the Maxus V80 as a long-term value proposition can only be evaluated over time.
