Carshop First Drive: New Volkswagen Touareg

The new Touareg is an impressive beast, says Kelly Loedwyks, with its fully kitted out interior, refined 190kW/600Nm 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine and technological advancements, it feels like a giant step away from the previous model. It may face stiff competition in the form of Audi’s Q7 and BMW’s X5, but it certainly holds its own in this company.

I have a soft spot for the Volkswagen Touareg. My significant other had the previous iteration as a long-term vehicle a few years ago, so when the opportunity to drive this new version presented itself, I was very much willing and eager to give it a go.

Built on the MLB platform that also underpins the Audi Q7, the Touareg is large and imposing. The new version has a wider grille, large air intakes and sharp lines. The rear is very reminiscent of its Q7 sibling, which isn’t a bad thing to be honest. It’s a very stylish, premium SUV - something I would (and have) happily taken to business meetings as well as on the odd run to the shops.

Volkswagen claims that this is the most “technologically advanced Volkswagen model of its era”. With the short amount of time I spent in the Touareg, it’s clear to see why. The interior has digital instrument readouts that can be personalised to suit the tastes of the driver, as well as new infotainment system with a touchscreen display. The latter includes Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 compatibility, a navigation system, two USB ports and more.

Under the bonnet of the model that made its way onto our driveway is a 3.0-litre V6 TDI unit with 190kW and 600Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is a helluva impressive unit that’s perfect for getting somewhere quickly or simply plodding along in traffic. The diesel engine is refined and the drive is smooth. I really enjoyed being behind the wheel.

Standard features on this Luxury spec model gives you easy open/easy close tailgate, electrically foldable tow bar with trailer assist, a rear view camera with park assist and park distance control, lights and vision package, active climate front seats, climatic air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, "Discover Pro" navigation system, light assist high-beam control, app-connect and so much more.

Conclusion

The new Touareg is an impressive beast and this V6 diesel is a wonderful unit. With its fully kitted out interior and technological advancement, it feels like a giant step away from the previous iteration. It may face stiff competition in the form of the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5, but it certainly holds its own in this company.
