The range was recently updated
The local Ciaz range was recently updated with a visual upgrade, added specifications and a powerful new 1.5-litre engine. The new Ciaz upgrade also introduces Suzuki’s Smartphone Linkage Display Audio (SLDA) to the GLX specification level and adds an additional model – a Ciaz 1.5 GL Automatic – to the range.
This engine delivers 77kW at 6 000 rpm and 138Nm at 4 400 rpm. The exterior now features a painted grille that stretches the full length of the nose between the headlamp clusters, chrome inserts, new headlamp clusters with automatic LED headlamps and integrated daytime running lights on the GLX model. The GL model, in turn, has new halogen projector headlamps.
It’s packed with features
Nice-to-have features include a reverse camera with rear parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands. Also, on the model I had the chance to drive – the 1.5 GLX 5 Speed Manual – are nice-to-haves such as automatic climate control and electrically folding side mirrors. There is also keyless access with engine Start/Stop functionality.
It’s a family car so, safety is of high importance
This Suzuki sedan is perfect for families. With safety features such as airbags for the driver and front passenger, ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assistance (BAS) and the addition of a high-level brake light. All models are also fitted with an alarm and immobiliser, child-proof rear child door locks and additional side-impact protection on all doors.
The driving experience is… fine
I say “fine” because it’s not a bad driving experience, nor is it a very exciting one. And that’s ok because it’s not meant to be the type of car that give you thrills. The 1.5-litre engine mated with a five-speed manual was perfectly capable of getting us where we needed to be. The suspension is soft and, dynamically, the Ciaz proved to be pleasant. It was easy to work through the gears and while I sometimes missed a sixth gear, it didn’t hamper the driving experience much.
It plays in a competitive field
The Ciaz goes up against the likes of the Toyota Corolla Quest and Volkswagen Polo sedan. Pricing for the Polo starts at around the R220 000 mark, the Quest at around R235 00, while the cheapest Ciaz can be had for R219 000. Specification will vary depending on the trim level that you choose, but each one has its perks. We’d recommend doing some thorough investigating before you make your final choice.
