The days of accusing Volvos of being restyled Ford Mondeos are so far in the past it’s almost impossible to imagine. Just look at them now, the entire Volvo line-up, a svelte box (an oxymoron, but it’s true) bookended by ornate head and tail lamp jewellery, the front containing a light-show tribute to Mjolnir while the rears rise like forest fires up the flanks to kiss their floating roofs.

Volvos are beautiful, if somewhat samey and I don’t mean that as any kind of criticism. They’ve nailed their stylistic formula and have applied it with gusto to their XC40, XC60, XC90 and S90. To be fair, the previous generation were already lookers but can’t hold a candle to the current crop of Volvos. Keep going back and you’ll encounter a boxier phase of Volvo where the 850 saloon and estate thrived. Venture even further into Volvo’s past and you’ll uncover the (still quite rectangular) 144, then the slippery 122 or Amazon. Then there’s the P1800 coupe, an iconic shape that is just now being decanted into the upcoming Polestar cars.

Likes: Styling, safety, technology and even performance.

Dislikes: They’ve gotten pricey and the doubly-boosted 4-cyl powertrains are not for everyone.
